The LDS have a record of the baptism of a Mary Ann Mayo (parents Joseph and Ann) in St Philip's,​ Birmingham on 31 March 1834. Her birthdate is also given, though whether that comes from the original record is unclear.

1841 census: (as Mary) living on Wharf Street, Birmingham, with (presumably) mother and siblings. Her age is given as 7, and she is marked as having been born in Warwickshire.

1851 census: (as Mary A.) living with father and sisters on Howard [or Steward?] Place in the St Jude's district of Birmingham. She is 16, working in 'Screw[?] making', and born in Birmingham.
