1848: the birth of a James Holmes was registered in the December quarter of 1848 in Chester-le-Street district (v. 24, p. 38).

1849: Audrey Thorogood says that he was baptised 18 February 1849 in Chester-le-Street.

1851 census: living at Waldridge Fell, with parents and siblings (and a servant!). Age is 2 and place of birth is 'Durham' [meaning the county, I think].

1871 census: living at 18 Blue Row, Waldridge, with parents and brother. Age is illegible [but listed above brother Adam, so presumably older (and Audrey Thorogood reads it as 22)], place of birth is Waldridge, and occupation is Coalminer.

1903: Audrey Thorogood says that he died 6 February 1903, aged 54, and was buried in Chester-le-Street (Ropery Lane cemetery, plot B14, with his wife).
