1851 census: living with wife, children, and lodgers in East Reach, Taunton. He is aged 38, his occupation umbrella maker, and his place of birth is Barnstaple, Devon.

1853: He registers the birth of his son (leaves his mark, rather than signing). He is living in East Reach, Taunton, working as an umbrella maker.

1861 census: living with wife, children, and lodgers in East Reach, Taunton. He is aged 47, his occupation 'Common lodging house keeper', and his place of birth is Barnstaple, Devon.

1871 census: living with wife, children, and lodgers in East Reach, Taunton. He is aged 57, his occupation 'Marine Store Dealer', and his place of birth is Barnstaple, Devon.

1875: Described as an umbrella maker (and not said to be deceased) at the time of his son John's marriage.

1877: The death of a Robert Hayman, aged 64, is registered in the March quarter of 1877 in Taunton district (5c291).

1878: At the time of his son Robert's marriage, he is described as deceased [this is confirmed by the fact that his wife is a widow by the 1881 census]. His occupation was 'umbrella maker'.
