Henry Jones
born 26 December 1869
  in Gloucester, Gloucestershire
died very roughly 1943
  in Gloucester, Gloucestershire

I have a copy of the birth certificate. Henry Jones was born in Bastion House to one Mary Ann Jones of Barton Street, Gloucester. The birth was registered on 24 January 1870 by the mother.

1871 census: (with the surname 'Brownett') living at 32 Alvin Street, Gloucester, with mother, stepfather, and half-brother (and apparently also with one Henry Smith, an unmarried plasterer of 21). Age is 1 and place of birth is Gloucester.

1881 census: (with the surname 'Brownett') living at 30 Alvin Street, Gloucester, with mother, lodger Henry Smith, and (half-)siblings. Age is 11 and place of birth is Gloucester.

According to Leslie Hart: 'Henry Jones came from the area around Newnham-on-Severn and was known to his family as Harry Jones-Brown-Smith since his mother had three husbands! He was a building-trade worker; I usually associate him with roofing work (slating and tiling).' It seems that the strange story about the surname does originate in Henry's mother's relationship with men called Smith and Brownett.

1891: Les adds that he's seen Harry Jones-Brown-Smith (under that name) in the 1891 census.

1891: at time of marriage (as Harry) he is 22, a bachelor, living at 2 Chapel Row, Tonyrefail, and working as a labourer.

1900: on his daughter Agnes Sophia's birth certificate he is described (as Henry) as a house painter's labourer (living at 3 Clarence Row, Alvin Street).

1901 census: (as Harry) living with wife and children at 3 Clarence Row, Gloucester. Age is 31 and place of birth is Gloucester. Occupation is plasterer's labourer.

1911 census: (as Mr H Jones) living with wife and children at 3 Clarence Row, Alvin St, Gloucester. Age is 42 and place of birth is Gloucester. Employed as a labourer.

According to Royston Hart, he died in his 80s, before WW2, at Clarence Row, Gloucester. His wife outlived him. He was very deaf. NB, though, that Les says he was present at his wedding in 1942.
